Today is November 10, and it's the anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking in 1975. The Edmund is one of those Minnesota legends that's pretty tough to miss and when they talk about the gales of November it's no joke. When I lived in Duluth, it was always quite the site to see the Big Lake turn to an angry brown, gray and white and at times, the waves would be big enough roll over the pear. I remember riding down to the lake at night listening to the waves and fog horn as I watched the ships sail into the harbor. I even became somewhat of a ship nerd learning about all of the different vessels that came to town. There is something really humbling about living by a the Big Lake, it kinda creeps into you.
As I write, (I know its the 11th when you read this) they are lighting the beacon on the Split Rock Lighthouse for the crew of the old ship. I think it's pretty cool. This week is a bit of a homer Dump as all bikes are from around Lake Superior or Minnesota in honor of the old Edmund Fitzgerald, another steel beauty.
