FAQ

Why is Straggler considered Surly’s dedicated gravel machine?

Our enginerds ride plenty of gravel here in the Midwest realm. Between the idyllic routes and sucky slogfests, they’ve taken lessons from these rides and built them into Straggler to give it almost an unfair advantage.

50mm tire clearance gives you plenty of traction and cushion on long-forgotten county roads. Stable geometry helps prevent “oh shit” moments and makes long rides more comfortable. And our chromoly Natch steel tubing holds it all together while holding up to the rough-and-tumble terrain you might find out there.

Is Straggler good for rides that start in town and end on gravel?

Need to escape society for a bit? We get it. We also get that not everyone wants to drive to a bike ride. Straggler balances gravel stability with a dose of sportiness so as not to feel sluggish when you’re grinding through miles of suburbs to get to the good gravel stuff. Its buffet of cargo mounts lets you bring all the water and snacks you need for a sweaty little day out.

Straggler vs Midnight Special: which bike is better for gravel?

Straggler is definitely our go-to gravel bike. It’s designed and built with stable geometry and massive tire clearance that you’ll appreciate on gritty unpaved backroads.

Can Straggler double as a commuter bike?

Buddy, you can commute on pretty much any bike. But yeah, you could view Straggler as  a gravel-born, pavement-ready commuting bike that gets you to the ol’ grind especially well thanks to its durable chromoly steel frame, rack mounts to help haul you lunch and laptop, and fender mounts to keep road spray at bay.

Is Straggler enough bike for all-day gravel exploring?

Yep, Straggler can settle into an all-day rhythm with the best of ‘em. A supple steel frame, comfy geometry, mondo tire clearance, and cargo mounts make that fifth dead-end something you can laugh about rather than stress about.
