Jeff Hainlen

Project Manager

Jeff Hainlen a.k.a. Jeff Matthews Band

Where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Stillwater, Minnesota on the banks of the St. Croix River. Famous for Beer Can Island, Fulton Reed from The Mighty Ducks, and Grumpy Old Men.

What are your interests/hobbies?
Trail running, single-speeds, Ultimate Frisbee, and camping. When it comes to music all you need is DMB (only person in the history of Surly to write that).

Who do you think you are, anyway?
I’m a combination of relentless positivity and sick dance moves, you can call me Young Christopher Walken.

Give me your top ten factoids about yourself that others may not realize.

  1. I was kicked out of my elementary school classroom for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance
  2. I’m a huge fan of starting dance offs in bars
  3. I didn’t learn to use chopsticks until I was in my 20’s
  4. I have all of the words to It’s The End Of The World As We Know It memorized so I can win every karaoke battle
  5. My wedding officiant was a National Slam Poetry Champion
  6. My friends and I invented an bizarre version of quarters called Quijibo
  7. If you’re in your 30’s and are still willing to party you’ve just made a friend for life
  8. I wrote and performed a sock puppet version of Oedipus Rex
  9. If you need someone to play Nirvana on the cello I’m definitely your guy
  10. Instead of children’s books my father read The Lord of the Rings to me, you’ll have to let me know how you think I turned out as a result

Who or what influences your behavior and why?
My parents who taught me the value of hard work, education, and never once said, “That’s stupid” when I told them what I wanted to be. Scott Jurek and Anton Krupicka for inspiring me to seek adventure every day in life and push beyond what I think I can do.

What would you say your job is around here?
I work with the most innovative people in the bike industry to bring our projects from crazy 2:00am fever dreams into the real world. They supply the imagination, I bring the OCD.

One sentence to say what you want to. Go.
I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams.
